Victoria’s proud brewing tradition dates back to 1858, nine years before Canada became a country.

Unlike his fellow 30,000 prospectors, all lured to Victoria by the promise of Fraser River Gold Rush, William Steinberger, Victoria’s first brewer, brought with him the lesson of how San Francisco breweries had thrived during the California Gold Rush.

The Victoria Brewing Company he founded was a proud symbol of the Victoria’s growth from fledgling colony to a coastal port city… a tradition Victoria’s breweries carry on to this day.
