After WW II Victoria lost its strategic importance as a trans-Pacific mail transfer point through changes in transportation patterns. With the heavy losses sustained by the Canadian Pacific fleet during the war, and the rise of American trans-Pacific liner competition, the great CP Pacific Empress Liners were slowly withdrawn from service. This led to both Canadian Airways and United Airlines introducing Seattle – Vancouver airmail services.
